Hello from the Other Side

new and improved, now with less uterus

author Sandy Allen, a white trans man, seated in a blue sweater with an ice pack on his belly

Hi all,

I’m a week and a half out from surgery and feeling…alright, all things considered. Getting strength back every day, but still fairly limited in some ways. Exhausted. Thrilled to have this done, at last.

What’s Helping Today: Feeling immensely grateful to everybody who’s supported me through this time, in particular my caregivers. Also my friends and neighbors who’ve sent well-wishes and brought food and helped out.

I’m fortunate my surgeon is also trans, and she has been just amazing — so knowledgable and understanding. The nurses and such have all been great, too. Overall, I have felt very cared for throughout this challenging experience.

Huge thanks to Christine Grimaldi for this lovely recommendation of my work in The Flytrap’s year-end roundup. This has gotta be one of the kindest compliments I’ve ever received:

Sandy Ernest Allen is a ‘drop everything’ byline for me and should be for you, too. Drop everything to read about his experience at ‘a sleepaway camp for grownups just like me’ in his Esquire essay, ‘Into the Woods with 150 Trans Men.’

Okay that’s it for now. Just wanted to say hi and I’m alive. Sending you all love and strength as we begin this daunting year.

Take care,
Sandy

p.s. Again if you’re on Bluesky, you can now follow me on there.

p.p.s. As ever, if you wanna send in a question for a future advice column, write [email protected]. Otherwise contact me here.

p.p.p.s. Lots to be worried and afraid about (as a trans person) these days, but, there’s always some cause for hope, too.
