Nice Stuff #13

Some links to some things ...

Welcome to What’s Helping Today, a newsletter about the everyday work of staying alive on earth — written by author and journalist Sandy Ernest Allen.

Hey all,

Mostly wanted to share another round of links to some nice stuff …

Hell yeah, love to see it …

Also love it when this bullshit backfires …

Read Bijan Stephen on Beverly Glenn-Copeland!

Great coverage:

Fellow trans journalists! Applications for this close tomorrow …

To anyone considering migrating their newsletter off of substack (as I once did and recommend everyone else do, too), I wanted to share this insightful post:

This is dope …

Awesome otter news …

Awesome whale news …

Hey speaking of whales … Repeating myself but, once again, this episode is live:

NEW EPISODE! "Admiral, there be whales here!" In which we discuss the Star Trek with the whales in it with @sandyernestallen.bsky.social.. This movie is SO GOOD!

You Are Good (@youaregood.bsky.social)2026-04-29T07:36:00.000Z

We also recorded a bonus ep, on some TNG!

I wanted to share a few of the nice words folks have said about my new feature for Assigned, on Anemoni House

This is an interesting and insightful read—and a great example of “people can just do things” to make life better or a little bit easier.
I live locally and supported Wildflower’s efforts to open this respite. I’m so glad to see they are succeeding. Thank you for this thoughtful piece to help highlight some much needed positive news!
If this resource has existed earlier, some people in my life might still be here. What wonderful, vital work. I’m so grateful and excited to hear about it. Thank you for writing this piece @sandyernestallen.com
This is so beautiful, Sandy. Your last line, “I drove away feeling less alone,” has been echoing in my mind. I hope one day there are, indeed, replicas of Anemoni all over. (I keep imagining the flowers, anemones, seeding all over the country, which feels apt.) Always grateful for your writing
If you care about mental health and you’ve ever thought, huh, is lcoking people up and forcing medication on them when they’re in crisis actually a good idea? Here’s an effective and compassionate alternative in Massachusetts, may it be replicated everywhere soon please. More compassion please!
this is a really beautiful piece about peer respite, obviously near and dear to my heart

Here again is the story:

If you haven’t yet, I hope you’ll give it a read.

Take care,
Sandy

p.s. This last week I consulted with a therapy practice; it went great! Mental health professionals: Periodic reminder you can hire me to work with your team (in this case on supporting trans/queer clients). Here’s my page about consulting.

p.p.s. Another reminder that I’m also available for hire to speak. Here’s my page about speaking.
