“What my anger is worth is bound up in my humanity's worth"

re: cis allyship

Welcome to What’s Helping Today, a newsletter about the everyday work of staying alive on earth, written by author and journalist Sandy Ernest Allen.

Hi all,

I wanted to share this post by Lindsey Adler, in which I’m quoted, about the vitality of cis people getting angry about what’s happening to trans people right now. It’s great. I was grateful to be included.

screenshot says: "Before writing this piece, I asked my friend Sandy if he feels safe expressing anger right now. His thoughts are more complex than a yes or a no, but this point felt particularly salient to me: “What my anger is worth is bound up in my humanity's worth.”"

Especially if you’re cis, I hope you’ll check it out and consider sharing with others. Here was an older post I wrote about anger itself.

A few recommended podcasts:

The latest This American Life was good: Ten Things I Don’t Want to Hate About You.

This reported mini series about sex-testing in sports is highly recommended: Tested.

Enjoyed this Culture Study episode about the perniciousness of ‘budget culture’ that is rooted in restriction and shame (not unlike ‘diet culture’).

What’s Helping Today: After not being allowed to do so for over two months of surgery recovery, yesterday I finally got to take a bath (hooray).

Also, yesterday I saw a rose fringe on the sugar maples, which to me implies we will someday arrive at spring.

Sending you love,
Sandy

p.s. It was brought to my attention that some of my quotes from the Xtra piece were posted on IG by Transgender Law Center and a lot of folks have engaged with it, which is cool! (Tho LOL that they edited me saying “shit.”)

p.p.s. I’m a he/him these days fwiw.
